ART VACANCY (Ames, IA): Check in, Check out

Art Vacancy is an event organized by Ames C.art to facilitate a mutually beneficial relationship between unoccupied spaces and underrepresented art.

Ames Collaborative Art (amescart.org) and ten local artists will briefly descend upon Ames’ Main Street, with the generous support of local property owners and philanthropists. Various contemporary works will be shown including: an interactive temporary park, a moving sound installation, an immersive meditation environment, and a virtual reality for chickens.

Here in central Iowa there are artists tirelessly creating work that has no ability to exist above a couch or in an office. The value of this type of art does not rest in its objectness, but in its ability to stimulate, generate, and facilitate. It inspires, informs, and questions. Spaces for this art typically lie in lofty museums in large metropolises. Ames will get a burst of this work for a weekend, turning on the lights in its vacant spaces, resting, and then moving on.
